Lewis Sandoboe b. 1995

Lewis Sandoboe is a lifelong resident of the South Side neighborhood Chatham. After joining our South Side Studio in 2024, he quickly established a dedicated and prolific creative practice. 

Informed by an encyclopedic knowledge of production company logos, Sandoboe has produced hundreds of marker drawings, meticulously organized by year, that chronicle subtle evolutions in design over time. Through repetition and sustained observation, this ongoing series transforms familiar commercial imagery into an expansive and compelling visual archive.

Saturated and vibrant, his works on paper are rooted in a graphic sensibility while balancing this precision with spontaneity. Although his source material is systematic, his gestural linework and intuitive flourishes are distinctly hand-made.

 “I like to draw fictional characters and production logos like 20th Century Fox, TriStar, and Paramount. What I’m working on right now are logos of Chicagoland car dealers that are both in business and out of business. I’m also drawing fast food restaurant and Chicago news channel logos from the 90s. I use pencils and markers to make drawings. I work quickly. I watch old tv promos, commercials, and news clips on YouTube.” - Lewis Sandoboe
